Who is Your Ideal Customer? Choosing the Right Business Idea

Hi Reader,

I recently shared the following sentence:

“If you can tell a stranger in one sentence what you are doing and who you are writing for, then you know exactly what your niche is, aka your ideal subscriber or customer.”

Mine: I help women 40+ to make their first dollar and beyond by teaching them how to start and build a thriving online business.

Can you summarize it exactly like this?

I can imagine what you're thinking—another article about finding the right niche.

Yes, the topic might feel as worn-out as old chewing gum.

But today I’m not here to discuss whether you need a niche or how to find one that fits your business.

Instead, I want to get specific about understanding your potential customer.

When I started my first blog, I learned about finding a niche—a mix of your passion, skills, and market demand. To be honest, it wasn’t easy to find the overlap as clearly as others seemed to.

I wrote about various topics that I thought fit into my niche, but my content didn’t generate any revenue.

Then I discovered something eye-opening that changed my entire writing process and workflow: the simplicity of understanding the WHO.

Who am I talking to? And not just that—who am I, and are we, my audience and I, a good fit for each other?

Realizing this simple method allowed me to still write about various topics that my audience might be interested in.

Knowing exactly who I was talking to helped me clarify the language I used and identify the right products to create to better serve them.

What Defines the "Who"?

The “Who” is crucial to your business success.

Here's how to define it:

  • The “Who” is who they are: Your niche, the specific group of people you are targeting.
  • The “Who” is who you are: Your positioning and how you relate to your niche.
  • Both must be a match: Your target audience and your positioning should align perfectly.

Think about how you are showing up for your audience—your “who”—and your niche. Ensure that your niche not only has the money but is also willing to spend it.

Three Simple Tips to Identify Your "Who" for Your Online Business

  1. Reflect on Your Own Interests and Experiences
    • Think about your hobbies, passions, and experiences. Who might benefit from your knowledge and skills? Your “who” often shares similar interests and can relate to your personal journey.
  2. Identify Common Problems You Can Solve
    • Consider the common problems or challenges you can solve with your business. Who are the people facing these issues? Your “who” is the group of people looking for solutions you can provide.
  3. Create a Basic Customer Profile
    • Outline a simple profile of your ideal customer. Think about their age, gender, interests, and lifestyle. This basic profile will help you understand who you are speaking to and tailor your content and products to meet their needs.

These tips will help you start identifying your “who,” ensuring your business resonates with the right audience from the beginning.

Conclusion

Identifying your “who” is a crucial step in starting a successful online business.

By reflecting on your interests, pinpointing common problems you can solve, and creating a basic customer profile, you'll be better equipped to connect with your target audience.

Remember, the clearer you are about who you’re talking to, the more effective and impactful your business will be.
